Patricia Quigley, PhD, MPH, ARNP, CRRN, FAAN, FAANP, CINDRR affiliate investigator, Tampa, FL, has been awarded the 2015 Association of Academic Physiatrists Excellence in Research Writing Award for her article "Exercise Interventions, Gait, and Balance in Older Subjects with Distal Symmetric Polyneuropathy." This award recognizes the lead author of the best paper published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (AJPM&R) each year.

Dr. Quigley's article, with co-authors Tatjana Bulat, Brian Schulz, Yvonne Friedman, Stephanie Hart-Hughes, James Richardson, and Scott Barnett, in the January 2014 issue of American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (AJPM&R) discussed the preventative benefits of Tai Chi and/or functional balance training for older patients with distal symmetric polyneuropathy. Results were based on the result of their study of 100 older patients who were randomized into one of three intervention groups: functional balance training, Tai Chi training, or education only. These results may have implications on fall risk and fall-related injuries.

Dr. Quigley is an Associate Director of the VISN 8 Patient Safety Center of Inquiry, serving in this capacity since 1999. She is also a nurse practitioner in adult health and a clinical nurse specialist in rehabilitation, nurse educator, and certified in rehabilitation nursing. She has expertise in patient safety, program evaluation, rehabilitation, functional independence, fall and injurious fall prevention across settings, and epidemiology.

The VISN 8 Patient Safety Center of Inquiry (PSCI) is part of the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa, Florida. The PSCI has a 15-year track record of evaluating and translating patient safety research findings into standard practices that are disseminated and implemented to improve patient safety across the entire VHA system.

The mission of the Center is to support clinicians in providing safe patient care by designing and testing safety processes related to patient, provider, technology, and organization. Specifically, the PSCI goals are to:

  1. Prevent injurious falls (specifically focusing on the most serious injuries: hip fractures and intracranial hemorrhages) and minimize adverse events associated with hazardous wandering.
  2. Promote the safe use of technology associated with injurious falls and hazardous wandering.
  3. Promote a culture of safety to support clinicians in providing safe patient mobility.
